Chronic Sinusitis and How Nasal Rinse Can Help

Your cartilage is fit! How do you know? Because your nose runs and runs and never gets tired.

If you find yourself nodding along, you may be suffering from chronic sinusitis. This is a condition not only marked by a runny nose, but also postnasal drainage, nasal congestion, pain around the eyes, cheeks, nose, forehead, or ears, a reduced sense of smell and taste, a cough that gets worse at night, bad breath, fatigue, sore throat, and nausea. Yep, it reads almost like a cold remedy commercial!

If you’re a sufferer, you’re certainly not alone. In fact, chronic sinusitis is one of the most prevalent conditions in the country. It affects all age and ethnic groups (really, anyone with a nose).

According to Dr. Stephen Chandler, chronic sinusitis has many causes: viruses, nasal polyps, or a deviated septum. Often, chronic sinusitis develops from a case of acute sinusitis – the symptoms get less dramatic, but they never truly go away.

The condition, at its root, also has to do with oxygen deprivation.

Normal sinuses rely on oxygen in order to function at optimal capacity. In chronic sinusitis, the nasal pathways are obstructed, leaving the lining deprived of air. This anaerobic environment causes the mucosal lining to become nonfunctional and devitalized. It’s often cyclic, getting worse the longer it progresses.

The condition festers a few ways. First, the cilia on the sinus lining can’t efficiently clear nasal secretions, resulting in a buildup of mucus (and other gunk and junk).  Then, the stagnation of these secretions sets the stage for bacteria to foster: your nose just sits there idly, waiting to become infected.

This doesn’t mean chronic sinusitis needs to be chronic for life: nasal rinse can help. Nasal rinse is a solution (a saline solution!) without side effects. Unlike multiple courses of antibiotics, this treatment is natural and comes without the risk of antibiotic resistance. Nasal rinse works by removing the mucus, reducing inflammation, and moisturizing the environment.

For people who use nasal rinse regularly, the relief lasts. Repeated irrigation helps the nose return to its natural environment. The nose knows what it’s supposed to do and nasal rinse helps it go back to doing its job.

ResQRinse is a new nasal rinsing system that uses choanal occlusion, a process that eliminates the negative side effects of other devices. ResQRinse helps manage chronic sinusitis by delivering the saline rinse directly through the nasal cavity.
